Terra Mission

artist: VA
title: Terra Mission
label: Camino Blue
catalogue: CAMINOCD003
format: 2CD
date: 05/2010
country: Germany
info:
In the heady days of rave 2010 seemed like the future and the mid90s D&B era was the soundtrack to that future. Now it almost feels that partnering the words futuristic and drum & bass is a cliché of epic proportions.
However, Camino Blues latest compilation album Terra Mission combines the kind of scientific influence of old, with a slice of modern D&B that satisfies the natural partnership and doesnt feel forced or impossibly self important.
Taking inspiration from the Terra Mission an observatory that collects comprehensive global measurements of earth's atmosphere, cryosphere, lands, and oceans Camino Blue offers an insight into global musical freedom with a slick technical edge.
Featuring a host of names, some of which you will recognise and some which will be fresh to your ears, Terra Mission encompasses everything thats exciting about cool and clear drum & bass. Fans of Good Looking, Creative Source and Critical Music should lap this up.
CD1 brings you 11 unmixed tracks from the likes of Electrosoul System, MAV, Physics or ICR, while CD2 delves deep into the Camino Blue crates with a continuous DJ mix of all things past and present from P.B.K. featuring vocals from Wiosna.

V.A. - Buried Treasue

title: Buried Treasure
label: Offshore
catalogue: OSRCD001
format: CD
date: 04/2007
country: USA
info & tracklist:
To sweeten the deal, Offshore's aesthetic mastermind, CEDE, created an actual "Buried Treasure" comic strip featured on the CD insert and stars the ever popular mascot, Bing. All of the favorites are here, so take a musical journey through 10 tracks that help further define the Offshore sound and carve out a new future with the addition of a new format to the catalog.
01 ASC "Fragments"
Written and produced by James Clements. ASC wrote this with Offshore in mind. Those are always the tracks that we love!
02 Graphic "Stop Motion"
Written and produced by David O'Brien. Graphic's original beat for his project with Beans. Beans wrote lyrics for it, but they didn't mesh nearly as well as "I Am Metal".
03 ASC "Fotophresh (Cloak & Dagger Rmx)"
Written and produced by James Clements. Additional production and remix by Evan Gach. ASC remixed a Cloak & Dagger tune, so Cloak & Dagger came up with the 'combine and remix' idea for two of ASC's great Offshore tracks, "Photosphere" and "Fresh".
04 Graphic & Slide "Crash Kit"
Written and produced by David O' Brien and Seth Orgain. Graphic and Slide watched this track get added to and removed from the release schedule numerous times. We can't let them go through that again.
05 Raychem "Time for What?"
Written and produced by Jón Berg Jóhannesson. Raychem constantly sends us great music. We finally decided to showcase it.
06 Martsman "Marksman"
Written and produced by Martin Heinze. Martsman captured Offshore's attention with this track. We planned a 12" backed with "Ago", but that appeared on the second split with Commercial Suicide.
07 Intex Systems "Aural Void (ICR Rmx)"
Written and produced by James Clements. Additional production and remix by Zoltan Gal. ICR remixed this "Troubled Waters" exclusive after ASC's remix of "Change Inside" appeared on OSR011. We can't keep it to ourselves any longer.
08 Resound "Something"
Written and produced by Ilpo Karkkainen. Resound brought us this piece as the B-Side to OSR011. In the end, it did not appear on that release.
09 Fanu "Defunct Drums' Depression Decade VIP" Written and produced by Janne Hatula. Fanu gives his Offshore debut the VIP treatment. We don't have another 10" series though.
10 Sileni "Twitchy Droid Leg VIP"
Written and produced by Chris Leamy. Sileni's VIP of his seminal track. As the fifth rework in total, this marks the final chapter.
Released May 7, 2007 in the UK and June 4, 2007 in the US. Available digitally right now from Bleep! Preorder your copy at Breakbeat Science.

V.A. - Noise Corrosion

title: Noise Corrosion
label: Exegene
catalogue: XGNCD001
format: CD
date: 08/2006
country: UK
info:
Unwrapping the package for the first time it's observable that there's been plenty of care and soul poured into the presentation of this one-off rarity. Indeed, the charming fellow on the front cover appears somewhat equally transfixed as well. He's probably been won over by the instrumental hip-hop and amen amalgamations present in the first track, Paradigm X's mightily energetic 'Malthusian Blues'. It's a testament to the diversity of this label that such a number has been pencilled to headline proceedings on this compilation - much like Cartridge's wild and wacky 'Suspicion' that takes centre stage shortly after it's always stimulating to hear such a wide palette of sounds, moods and hybrids juxtapose surprisingly snugly in one place, and furthermore retain lasting appeal after multiple listens. I picked out a theme of tracks sharing an abundance of influences from the past, typified by colourful strokes of classical instrumentation (think Source Direct, Good Looking, plus Reinforced Records) and ornamenting them with contemporary aesthetics such as vivid electronic spasms and glitchy futurism. A risky combination you may agree, so I'm glad to reassure you that it's worked with startlingly good results in this case. I won't indulge in longwinded descriptions of each track for you, all I will say from this point on is that label owner Bob Cube has compiled a real gem here, with a dull moment inaudible throughout. And to all those looking for a springboard into the alternative sound of Drum & Bass, get yourself a copy of this asap. It could be the best £7.50 you'll ever spend.
tracklist:
01. Paradigm X - Malthusian Blues

With Conrad & Makoto's fantastic 'Golden Girl' currently riding high in junglist's hearts, the label that helped to take jungle to the masses is currently on the rise again, following a few years during which that trademark Good Looking sound appeared lose relevance somewhat. This two CD set takes in one of Bukem & Conrad's ever-tight live sets, and also a pristine studio mix of deep and dreamy Good Looking beats. It's that latter that works best, particularly when the baritone-voiced Conrad launches into a rendition of the aforementioned 'Golden Girl'. Bright and breezy. ~ Knowledge
LTJ Bukem and MC Conrad have touched every corner of the globe and provide a sound that people from all walks of life can relate to and enjoy. You even find people that dont normally like drum and bass at the famous Logical Progression sessions enjoying the music as much as any die hard D&B head. No wonder the Progression Sessions series on CD has done so well, and no doubt this next instalment of the legendary duo, live in Munich, will be another huge success in giving us all the listening pleasure of their live experience. As well as a very limited DVD release of the gig you can expect 2 CDs, the first being the live mix featuring the smooth vocals of Conrad and the second as an exclusive studio mix from the main man. This release includes plenty of the latest releases from Good Looking such as the massive anthem Golden Girl from Makoto (featuring the sweet vocals of Conrad) as well as fresh bits from CIA, 31 records and Social Studies. Other artists also included are Greg Packer with Organ Tune, Stress Level & TC-1s No Way Back, Catch 22, Basic Intentions and Ill Logic & Raffs Shootout to name a few. Just like with all the Progression Session live series, this release is truly one not to be missed. Treat yourself to some quality music! 10/10 ~ DOA

Basswerk Sessions 2

title: Basswerk Sessions Vol. 2.
label: Basswerk
catalogue: BWCD002
format: 2CD
date: 09/2003
country: Germany
it took us a long time to come up with a good follow-up to the succesful basswerk sessions 1 cd. now it became a double cd. as a consequence of our recent giana-brotherz 12 inch releases and the tgm album on combination, we received a lot of good tunes, also from new artists, which we have compiled together with the recent works of our own crew. besides the worldwide drum& bass movement, our artists tgm, taxidriver, giana brotherz, jonathan baker und bassface sascha, misanthrop, diz:play, konrad&coda, basztart & acoustic b, cytech and icr come up with very individual styles. basswerk philosophy remains the same: everything is allowed in the jungle, and we love the space that d&b offers for producing, as there is also room for punk, jazz, electronic and dub-vibes. the tracks sound epic, hard, organic or minimal, sometimes probably more adult compared to 98. never before has d&b in general been so ravy, yet we still think that the musical side of the tracks can be kept. there's no need for borders between minimal techno and rave or liquid funk-d&b. when the beats get faster, the musical aspect doesn't have to be reduced to vocals, soul or brasil elements. all the tracks on here have never been out on cd before. most of them will be released on basswerk vinyl, too. some of them will be on combination records (www.combination-rec.de) or the giana brotherz' new label - or are just exclusive on this cd. icr (impulsecreator) gál zoltán from hungary kept sending us demos and shows incredible sequencer skillz, doing most of his works within propellerheads reason. he lives on the countryside and hardly makes it to a party, but is the founder and co-editor of the country's well respected online drum & bass - magazine www.impulsecreator.hu. the hungarian d&b scene is huge and zoltán recently had a stunning release on breakbeat science's orgone label. his style is very electronic and joins other young hungarian producers shaping the futuristic sounds of the dsci4 label, while icr is being a little more musical and sometimes mellow.

"German label Basswerk showcases its finest over two CDs. A varied selection it is too, taking in everything from No U-Turn-style nastiness in generous amounts to the tech-y delights of 'Toytonic' by Taxidriver and the sumptuous Reprazent-style vocals and rolling breaks of Konrad and Coma. No true classics here, but this lot definitely know what they're doing production-wise, so watch this space" ~ Knowledge
